State and Local Pension Data

The State and Local Pension Data includes comprehensive information on public plans.  These data build on different resources to provide an expanded and consolidated source of public pension information. The data include primary defined benefit plans, primary defined contribution plans, and a sample of municipal plans.

We will post each separate data set as it is completed. All currently available data sets are accessible from this page.

The CRR gratefully acknowledges the Center for State & Local Government Excellence for its data collection effort.

Primary Defined Contribution Plans

The Primary Defined Contribution Plan Database is composed of non-supplemental, state-administered plans that can be classified as either a defined contribution plan or a combined plan (a plan with both a defined benefit and defined contribution component). Contained in the file is a codebook that defines the variables and a section of notes that describes any inconsistencies in the data set. Currently, these data are available for the 2006 fiscal year.

Defined Benefit Plans

The data set currently includes 2006 plan information on participants, governance, finance, and investments for 196 state and local defined benefit pension plans.  This effort is coordinated with the Public Fund Survey, which provides its own related, but separate, data set. These data will be updated annually and filled in for previous years.
