Pensions, Social Security, Wealth, and Lifetime Earnings: Evidence from the Health and Retirement Study

This project quantifies the impact of pension and Social Security wealth on household wealth using the Health and Retirement Study (HRS). The study will address many of the biases found in earlier work by employing new theoretical and economic frameworks, as discussed in Gale (1998, 1999). The study builds on the authors’ other collaborative research proposal, which examines related issues using a sample of retirees taken from the Survey of Income and Program Participation. Comparing the results of these studies will show which results are robust to different data sets and samples and which are not.
